Item 2026-12C App E Bowling Injury Prevention

WHAT'S THIS ABOUT

In 2026-27 Qld Premier Cricket have said they will be moving to make the limiting of bowling spells for underage fast and medium bowlers a mandatory restriction rather than recommendation.

DISCUSSION

Some people are surprised when they first discover that this elaborate scheme is not actually enforceable.

The aims of it are to prevent stress injuries in young bowlers, especially their lower backs.
It is well known that younger people's bodies are more susceptible to repetitive strain injuries. Older backs are stronger due to more developed musculature.

Limiting the bowling spells for younger pace bowlers is actually an effective way to reduce the risk of causing injuries to lumbar spinal injuries. The established history of limiting bowling spells has demonstrated this in reduced medical cases.

There's lots more to read about this topic here https://play.cricket.com.au/community/resources/player-safety/junior-bowling-guidelines

These measures are sometimes misunderstood or forgotten by teams or captains who substitute a desire to win for the long term welfare of individual players.

A change to the enforcement of mandatory bowling spell limits will put this argument beyond further dispute.

PROPOSAL

The text of this Appendix is adapted from Cricket Australia sources (principally to ensure compatibility with rules in other Cricket Associations).

As of the date of this post there is no text available yet for the new version of the Bowling Injury Prevention policy.

But I expect that this sentence will be the one that requires change.

OLD REGULATIONS What does this mean?/Why does it need change? PROPOSED NEW REGULATION

E16 Umpires have no power to suspend a player who breaches this regulation from bowling.

If a team captain chose to ignore bowler workload guidelines for an U18 bowler , then all that happens right now is there will be an umpire's report.

There seems to be no guideline for administrative bodies to  respond to such a report.

E16 Underage bowlers will not be permitted to exceed the limits listed in Appendix E (above).*

* Text may be adjusted to match Cricket Australia recommended wording.
